Just got unbanned. Here to say that the novels are surprisingly very mediocre and boring. Even giving it a bit of extra credit assuming the TL is bad, the characters are all so one note, it feels like I'm reading a more boring Muv Luv Extra. Maybe 20 years ago they were the hot new stuff on the market but having read Utsuro Hako, Oregairu, and having watched Monogatari and Bunny Girl, we have seen what is likely a seinfeld effect. Haruhi was absolutely trash for the first 4 novels, 5 to 7 were good, I'm on 8 now and finally the characters are starting to be enjoyable. Looking forward to catching up in a week.

Forgot to say as a writer I notice MANY writing shortcuts the author takes especially in the earlier volumes (and he even is quite meta about these in the actual volumes and brings them up via Kyon), it's clearly just throwaway garbage, but it has grown on me more and the author seems to be getting better.

The first volumes weren't really planned, it seems that after the first volume he just kinda expected to be called every other month to write a short thing and be done with it, not that they'd ask him to make a LN series, so yeah, I get what you mean about the first few volumes feeling all disjointed and lacking in content.
