>discover anime on cartoon network in mid-90s >blows my mind: "wow, it's like cartoons for adults" >sci-fi channel and MTV follow suit in promoting anime in the US >it's all 80s kino: akira, vampire hunter D, demon city shinjuku, etc. >start buying box loads of anime on VHS from AnimeNation and RightStuf in late 90s as a teenager >god this shit is amazing >show all my friends because nobody really knows what anime is at this point >go into anime chatrooms on yahoo in the late 90s >everyone is just RPing as their favorite sailor moon/DBZ/tenchi muyo characters >"hey anybody here like akira?" >nope, they're just RPing about low-taste crap >fast forward 10+ years, circa 2009ish >"oh hey, Zig Forums has an anime board!" >endless pages of moeshit, one-piece-tier crap, RP BS >mfw >my fucking face when
There was never really a place for people like me. The best I found was some "vintage anime" group on FB that was run by some fat fucking autist on a power trip. I got banned for interrupting his circle jerk. Christ, I wish I could just find a place where I can enjoy my kino vintage anime shit. Fist of the North Star. Golgo 13. Vampire Hunter D. MD Geist. Demon City Shinjuku. Wicked City. Ninja Scroll... There's gotta be at least ONE person here that enjoys that kinda shit... Right???
I remember going in AOL chatrooms around 1998 and the opinion was predominantly that anime was hardcore porn and nothing else.
Jace Hughes
You're awakening, run while you still can.
Camden Perry
I watched it on SciFi when it ran way early in the morning on weekends. Iria, Venus Wars, Lodoss, Tenchi/Lum movies, what else, a bunch of stuff you mentioned too. But their roster of OAVs and movies wasn't very large so it repeated often. Still, at the time that's all there was.
Nolan Martinez
none of those are that obscure so to answer your question, yeah probably
Daniel Sanders
Nice to see there are other oldfigs here.
Christopher Anderson
Yeah, I was going for surface level/top 20 type shit. If you want me to dig deeper, how about: Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma, Goku: Midnight Eye, Mermaid's Scar & Forest, Angels Egg is mainstream now but nice, Neo Tokyo, The Curse of Kazuo Umezu, Midori (also kinda mainstream from being cult), Roujin-Z, Kimera, Doomed Megalopolis, Shuten Doji (but only the first episode), Ping Pong Club, Dark Myth, Harmagedon, Violence Jack... etc...
It wasn't so much about obscure as it was about oldschool. It's kind of annoying that vintage anime is liked by so many pretentious hipsters but simultaneously annoying that it is virtually unknown to modern anime fans.
>yet another 90s teenager Zig Forumsutist that feels mature because he sees uncensored blood and swearing for the first time in a mongolian cartoon complains about popular shonen and moe we dont need this thread every single day
Adrian Ortiz
>Another whiny cunt whines
Matthew Bailey
Maybe there should be a /va/ board for the discussion of vintage anime if the subject is so popular. This board seems like it doesn't really deviate from moeshit or low-taste NPC-tier shit like one piece, my hero, no game no life, or whatever is popular on netflix or among the virginal zoomer anime scene.
Gavin Reyes
>kino and this is how you lose that part of the audience and attract Zig Forums adjacent shitposters
Levi Reed
>he thinks generic blood and gore and sex "the REAL world is unfair man, deal with it, shit sucks" garbage with autistic animation production values is good >gets triggered when someone tells him he has shit taste cope, your favorite 80s """kino""" is only good for "what went wrong???" gifs to complain about modern anime quality and it has shittier writing than the shonen you cry about
Blake Davis
If it's important for you that your cartoons are manly and mature you should try yaoi
Gabriel Walker
>watching ANIME of all mediums for the fucking story
Holy fuck, talk about outing yourself. Nah son, that 80s shit is exceptional for its superior hand-wrought art and production. Who actually watches anime for the fucking STORY... lmao, holy fuck. That's real cringe, bro.
Adrian Wilson
>buzzwords the thread
Daniel Reed
There's a board for you newfags. It's called get the fuck out or lurk more.
Michael Russell
>that 80s shit is exceptional for its superior hand-wrought art and production stiff shit with autistic levels of detail that only shit taste Zig Forumsutists care about because >OMG LOOK AT THIS OBJECTIVE HIGHLY DETAILED WORK >THIS IS REAL ART AND NOT DIGITAL SHIT YUCK i have seen bricks with more fluid animation than 80s anime
Cooper Martinez
Enjoy your soulless shit that was produced outside of the economic bubble that fostered the golden age of anime and only caters to pedos, manchildren, and NPC-grade weeaboos because of "muh animation" that is riddled with slapstick and slice of life bullshit centering around 13-year-old girls that are saving the world from the same big bad villains every time. Yawn as fuck. Congrats on your Neolithic taste I guess.
Asher Cook
Judging by those posts you're not aware of this, but you aren't just a fan of 80s anime, you're specifically into 80s horror. The 80's is much more diverse than that. Maybe you didn't find a place to discuss those shows because you're looking for the wrong thing? Just a thought.
Liam Perry
fuck off granpa
Jack Wilson
I understand your pain OP, I'm a 70s, 80s, 90s retro animefag myself but there isn't an active place on the internet to discuss that shit. Even Zig Forums has /vr/. I would live on an /ar/ board. I'm sure there is some discord out there somewhere at least.
Adam Murphy
use /m/, they'll discuss any old anime if it isn't moe
Landon Perry
>spergs out about sol, moe and shonen (with a side serving of "muh teenagers in anime") when his retarded soulless 80s """kino""" gets insulted >only argument is B-BUT YOUR FAVORITE ANIME SUCKS TOO, YOU PEDO MANCHILDREN NPC WEABOO >using weaboo as an insult unironically >in this mongolian paper making website's chinese cartoon bo/a/rd overdose on your meds
Adam Collins
>Mature animayz for a mature person like myself How about you grow up. No wait, just grow. Any little amount will do instead of stagnating, only liking one tiny genre of an entire medium and complaining you're not getting catered too when the market changes.
30+ here, so the 90's era anime airing on television are still in the mind. Problem is that the preference toward 80-90's anime could've come from foolish youth or if that decade was genuinely better. Brand New Animal for example was absolutely beautifully animated and had a good story. So can't say for certain that the quality of an anime is dependent on its' release decade.
Lincoln White
I know the feeling even worse if you are into semi-obscure 60s/70s stuff
even if the market changes, niches never die they just become slightly harder to find all im seein is OP crying like a bitch they need to be spoonfed shit to watch
Juan Nelson
I'll say that I have been enjoying the art of Dorohedoro and another one I almost got into was One Punch Man. But it's terribly a shame that the same low-taste consoomers that make all this other boring shit their entire identity also watch these anime just because they're anime and new. I just want to see beautiful, intricate, and highly detailed art in the context of atmospheric shit that's not afraid to be more ambient. I'll look into the one you mentioned, thx.
Andrew Nguyen
>first exposure of anime is akira >anime is cartoon for adults
What a pleb, first anime for most people is Doraemon and Ninja Hattori and we grew up with the knowledge that anime is for kids while eventually discovering more shows with mature themes
Chase Gutierrez
>doesn't really deviate from moeshit or low-taste NPC-tier shit You say that and yet the same few popular 90/80s anime/ova are constantly jerked off in these threads. You fuckers aren’t any better
anime is dead it's full of moe and self insert shit I miss real mature anime for adults
Michael Thomas
Zig Forums is full of secondaries
Gavin Jones
>the same few popular 90/80s anime/ova are constantly jerked off in these threads. yeah because they're good
Parker Wilson
We've had a ton of normalfags lately making garbage threads talking about how bad anime is now when they've seen maybe 15 anime. These retards always think old anime are nothing but GARshit because they're too retarded to fucking use google. It's actually quite stunning how many braindead retards still manage to think like this, it amazes me. OP, do this board a favor and lurk moar, you and the rest of your faggot band of facebook kids trying to LARP as "cultured" should do the same. I bet you haven't even watched all of gundam yet, bitch.
Matthew Turner
Why can't you people ever just say "90's anime" or something. Not your blog
The first anime I saw and recognized as "anime" or more specifically "Japanese animation" was Vampire Hunter D (1985). Akira was probably the second or third one I saw, actually. I'm not counting Twilight of the Cockroaches even though it premiered during the same promo as Vampire Hunter D.
Carter Cox
Zig Forums is full of illiterate normalfags nowadays, if you tell secondaries their favorite anime comes from a manga or vn because you got sick of their daily "season 2 when" crying they will refuse to read it
Asher Gutierrez
If it were any good, people would't talk about it all the time
Niggro I've been an anime fan for 25 years, probably longer than you've been alive. I've seen hundreds of films, OVAs, and TV shows from the 80s up until current. I've ranked and catalogued everything I've seen and streamed it for the past 10+ years. You can't even touch my knowledge and depth of what anime is. I'm saying that nothing I've seen from the current generation of anime even comes close to capturing what made 80s and early 90s anime so good. It's not even comparable. It's almost a totally different medium, and it's a shame that it shares the same namesake.
John Nelson
reminder no "muh mature manime, shonenshit and moeshit BTFO" retard can summarize the plot of the shit they praise without the help of google or tv tropes in fact more than half of them have to go to reddit or tv tropes to understand what the fuck it was about because they were watching with their brain off enjoying the gore, landscapes and mindfuck visuals
James Thompson
you're projecting really hard in this post
Logan Perry
Well you can’t talk about the board not being divergent enough and exclude these threads then. Since they’re even worse with that
Josiah James
>larps as an oldfag >admits to having a MAL and streaming like a fucking zoomie i hope this is pasta and i got baited
Matthew Lopez
I legitimately cannot tell if this nigga is being ironic anymore holy FUCK
Carson Diaz
>feel personally offended >b-b-but p-p-projecting you are fooling nobody, not even yourself
Nathan Lopez
I'm not offended at all, it was a bizarrely specific post which obviously came from your own insecurities
Bentley Gonzalez
I feel like you basically want this place to be nothing but 80s/90s anime discussions, which it is not and was never ever meant to be. There are all kinds of people with different tastes and preferences that come here to discuss anime/manga. Naturally, newer stuff are more popular here but nothing forbids you from creating threads about those old shows you liked. You will definitely find people that will discuss with you, and you might even get people that never watched them to take a look.
Or you can just keep feeling sorry for yourself, whatever works for you.
Anthony Hernandez
literally everyone has MAL, who cares
James Jones
>Consoom I thought this only applied when you actually purchase the product.
