The point he's trying to make is that the 2D world have some logic and basis in our world. Not to mention that majority anime are meant for salary men and teenagers to self-insert. That mean having a female rival or opposite sex rival won't attract enough people to buy their shits to warrant another season or the series to continue because niche market in Japan don't bring enough dough compared to China or America. The worst part is that if it is successful and popular, the new fans and bandwagoners will demand the rivals to fall in love with the MC or some dumb plot shit. You can see this phenomenon in Jashin-chan where season 1 Jashin-chan was fucking brutally evil to the point where she drop kick an angel and steal her only food on Christmas day in comparison to season 2 where Jashin-chan's evilness and brutality has been significantly brought down to rated PG tier.
