Those scenes in the manga were to introduce the main characters because the military school flashbacks didn't happen until after Trost.
In the anime that scene would feel unnecessary because we already get a good showing of Jean being a smug asshole, Eren being a self righteous ragetard and Mikasa over mommying Eren.
