Really, Goku and Chichi are two different idiots for similar reasons.

Goku lived out in the middle of fucking nowhere with his grandfather for his childhood, and then by himself in the middle of fucking nowhere until Bulma showed up. He didn't go to school, and he didn't learn anything other than fighting and some practical survival stuff. As he grows up, nobody bothers to really educate him on anything, and all he does is travel around, train, and fight people. He doesn't function in society because he has never had to learn how to.

Chichi was raised by just her weird father, the Ox-King. She was also undereducated and had no female role model in her life to help her understand herself or how relationships work. She was, in a sense, just as much of a bumpkin as Goku. She decides that they're supposed to be married because their two types of stupid line up just right to create a misunderstanding. Then she decides that their son is going to grow up to be a scholar, because that's what she (with her very limited understanding of the world), thinks is the only respectable path for her son to grow up following. If they'd had a daughter instead, she probably would have spent that girl's whole life prepping her on how to be a housewife.

Her husband took her son for a quick visit to their friends house and didn't call. When she went to visit to ask where they were she found out her husband was dead, her son was kidnapped and that the monster Piccolo would be training him for an entire year to fight Aliens. And nobody else is strong enough to stop any of this from happening.
That's a full year a mom was deprived of her son and her husband. An entire year of eating dinner alone in her cute little mountain home. An entire year not know if the day her husband comes back will be the day everyone on earth is fucking murdered by an evil alien monkey. She's got a right to be a bit overprotective.
