In the ancient world, and some less Westernized parts of the Orient still, it would be considered shameful and immoral to cause such a fuss as that. The concrete reality of guilt or innocence is less important than whatever verdict society has decided. Upsetting social harmony by loudly continuing to proclaim your innocence after judgement was already passed is immoral, almost worse than the crime itself, making you guilty of at least that.
