Previously, Natsuru Nanao is a 6th grader living with his single mother who had only a few months earlier transferred to his current school. He was eventually confessed to by Himegawa, a popular girl, but rejected her earning the ire of basically every other girl in class. On top of that, his beloved soccer coach was replaced by a more "professional" one who was a giant asshole. And even worse he'd learned that the previous coach was apparently in the hospital for cancer.
On the way home Natsuru wound up finding an abandoned kitten and tried to take it home but his mom ordered it out due to her allergies. Outside he ran across Suzumura, a girl from his class, who agreed to take in the kitten. Going along with her to her and her younger brother as she did her shopping, he accompanied them back to their home where he found out something that Suzumura wanted him to keep quiet about: that she and her brother live alone.
