>what even is the appeal?
The anime

Masterpieces

Digestible Disney-like movies for normies to pretend they like anime

Your new is showing

They make good films when Miyazaki isn’t in the director’s chair.

Technical competence

Good animation, good writing, good direction
what's the point of this thread? everyone should know this

>good writing
Lol

Don't you dare talk shit about spirited away

Their movies age really well, if you look at their stuff from the 80s and 90s it still looks great today, while the same can't be said for most other anime produced in the same period. They overall have really consistent quality.

Good animation that puts most stuff to shame and easily digestible plots that makes boomers and zoomers alike clap

nice, simple stories with good animation and music

He's not wrong. There would be a lot more to say about Ghibli, but it's true that there is this appeal in foreign countries for people grown on Disney's classics.

>Lol
Lol, what? Huh? Care to give a fucking coherent thought, you little shitstain? You think you know shit about writing? You think you know shit about critiquing? Shut up and sit in a corner, you little bitch

Production quality and literally nothing else. Their narratives aren't particularly great, their characters are typically very thin, their music is OK, but not very memorable. They are an OK studio. The only reason they're big is because they make everyman material, stuff that isn't targeted at a specific audience, which means it has the potential to appeal to everyone.

incredible talent wasted on such milquetoast works.

thought I had clicked the fucking kny thread that made it past my filter
my bad

This. Not even strictly in the west, either, but also in Japan.

If someone asks you "what anime do you like?" a Studio Ghibli production is literally the safest answer.

Underage girls.

charming worlds and characters and great music/animation.
only a jaded cunt doesn't like ghibli on some level.

I remember a post from a english teacher in japan where one of his kids asked him what his favorite anime was, user said haruhi and the kid said to keep that a secret and say something else lol

Timelessness. Their films will still be relevant in 50 years, while nearly every other animated work from Japan will fade into obscurity due to their niche appeal.

it's like eating your vegetables, it's not that bad and it's good for you

It's anime for normalfags. Why do you think western "critics" love them?

I once said in my class that I like "jokes about black people" and teacher stared at me with disdain

it was in 2009
and I was at university

good times

I'd say my fav anime is "Garden" and fuck the police and the system

Isao Takahata made many kinos for them.
Although Omoide Poporo was the only Ghibli film I've ever fallen asleep to (twice) whereas I just turned Goro's shit off.

I've never seen a Ghibli movie start to finish.

What does that have to do with anything?
Fuck off.

Almost everything that isn't made by Anglos will fade into obscurity. Mainstream culture is an Anglo monopoly, media made in the rest of the world rarely gets attention. Only Anglo press has an international audience, they fullly control the narrative.

mewkledreamy whatever the fuck sure isn't going to be remembered.

It´s literally japan Disney before Disney was shit. Their movies have that whimsical quality that makes everything feel like an adventure. They are pretty much the best at what they do.
