I’m not really a slice of life kind of guy, but this seemed interesting... and I’ve heard good things about it, should I give it a shot or is it a pass?

It's not a slice of life but yeah, read it. Unless you're very depressed, in case maybe don't. People call all sorts of stories dark or depressing, but usually it's bullshit and they just aren't used to heavy subject matter or tragedies. Punpun is the rare kind where I can actually believe it affecting your mood and outlook if you're a bit sensitive.

no it completely falls apart in the last third, a total waste of fucking time. it's only popular since people unironically think edge, pretty drawings, and sex make up for a shitty story

Not really. It would be more accurate to say that Asano abandons the message altogether at the end and makes Punpun suffer just to see him suffer. It's so over the top it's not even cathartic. It's completely out of character for Punpun to become complacent and raise Sachi's daugher and hang out with his loser "friends." The Punpun from the first ~12.5 volumes would most definitely keep trying to kill himself until he was successful after Sachi stopped him the first time. It's completely out of character for Punpun to go "my girlfriend's daughter" mode and gradually forget Aiko instead of just killing himself. Asano is a fucking hack and wrote the ending the way he did for more Punpun suffering and for more forced summer triangle symbolism.
