Phones don’t use towers to measure time, they have quartz crystal clocks in their embedded circuits. Just look up Real Time Clocks.

They use that to track seconds so the time can be updated. But they don't know what time it is. You set the time, either manually or from the internet. When you set your time in your phone it has nothing to do with the quartz in it. It's the same with watches that use quartz. And going back in time shouldn't affect anything in your phone any more than it would cause your own age to regress or your phone to degrade because it didn't exist in the past.

I think they have the time set from when they are manufactured.

Otherwise you wouldn't be able to change the time manually and the time wouldn't be able to change when moving to different time zones (or for daylight savings time). And like I said, the same tech is used in watches, which also rely on manually setting the time.

FYI, your phone still connects to the network without a phone plan. For instance, you can still call 911. And your time still syncs to the network.

It looks like the user talking about RTC is right to some extent. It's imprinted with a time (if you buy a new phone it's likely by default) and it will count from there. But it's periodically updated from the phone's GPS/tower/internet or whatever you want to call it. But based on this, if you traveled back in time it still shouldn't have any effect on this. It will just keep the time that it originally had from the RTC since it can never be updated anymore.

The RTC will apparently use the last known time and continue from there. Most phones (and I know that programming languages also have this) can also bring up the number of vibrations (of the quartz) since some date programmed in. Generally it's some time in 1970 but from looking around some places may use the founding date of the company or something. It's pretty interesting.

So going back in time would display the last time that was on the clock, and keep counting from there
