There's gotta be a point where anything lower than a certain number is because it's incompetant at what it's trying to do. Just being a bad or unenjoyable series doesn't mean it completely fails at the basics of being an animation or even the basics of storytelling. The lowest I've rated something is a 4 just because I've never watched anything that was just completely incompetent and fails at every aspect.

I hate saving 10/10 for flawless shit because it mostly means that they shied away from trying anything really difficult or ambitious

I rate stuff from 1.0 to 10.0 on my Anilist but it's set to private, it's not meant to demonstrate to others how good the show was. My ratings are based on enjoyment and how I felt, my mood and emotions, while watching and especially at the end.
If I completely enjoyed it and thought it had a good ending, that's at least a 9.5. Most things like that will be listed as a 10 unless it had a technical drawback that wasn't really a big deal, like some poor animation.

This is the only manga that I consider 10/10. It's flawless.

Review scales only makes sense if they are relative.
Imagine a world were an anime you would consider 7/10 was the best one around. Then, automatically, it wouldn't make sense too call the best 7/10 anymore.

The problem is that stories is really hard. There are too many things to consider and I can't decide which things matter more.

I can define a 4 or a 5, but I don't know how to separate a 1 from a 3.

why should reviews be spread evenly? X/10 reviews are incredibly contrived, entirely subjective, wouldn't it make the most sense for them to reflect how people think rather than a rigid distribution? X/10 reviews are entirely fucking useless either way because they will only ever reflect some stranger's vague impression of the show, and only have worth to yourself as a way to gauge your enjoyment across everything you've experienced. What's the point of reading some literal who's
>7/10 characters were good. good art. music just alright. not that good of an ending
when you can learn eight hundred million times more about it by looking at the synopsis, staff list, promo material, actually watching the damn thing, etc
you should know whether or not you want to watch something before you watch it, and have a good impression if you're going to like it or not in the first few minutes

really hard to rate*

This is a really good point. I've seen some "flawless" anime that I didn't enjoy any more than "flawed" works.

that's why we don't use one random strangers score, you use the average of a statically valid amount of humanity's score, which should give a fairly statistically accurate result of what it it's subjective rating to a human will be

>humanity's score
The majority of MAL and anilist users do not qualify as humans.

AniDB

This just comes from the fact that there is no reason to watch a meh 5/10 show unless for some gimmick rather than the shows quality, because there are simply more than enough 7/10 or higher shows that one could watch instead.

not in the slightest. the average, public opinion, is about as far removed from anyone's individual tastes as possible. The reason highly rated shows are so high is because they've had a reputation for being good, and this when they get introduced to the uninitiated, they expect them to be good. You might think that means good stuff gets highly rated because it's good, but in reality it means good stuff gets highly rated because the public already considered it good. That's why so many "bad shows" are rated high, and so many "good shows" are rated low. If the community you're looking at (MAL users, reddit users, Zig Forums users, nips) already have a community consensus, you're only getting that consensus, not an evaluation of the show. Of course, if you find a subset that matches your tastes you can use their reviews to find what you'd like, but you already have guaranteed subset that matches your tastes. It's you. So just figure it out yourself and you will literally always be right.

Or you could rate things based on your enjoyment, the show being compelling/engaging or whatever other criteria you can come up with, completely disregarding technical details. It's not like there's a strict ruleset that you're bound to.

there is no connection between review score and anime quality. You can't just adjust a scale to make the opinions of idiots become something valuable.

I someone'd watched something till the end, it's very unlikely he gave it a score lower than 5.

I would never watch something that I'd rate below a 5, so naturally very few things I watch surprise me and cause me to rate them horribly.

If you can just follow all generic tropes and have fine animations and voice actors you are probably able to make a barely enjoyable (mediocre, 5/10) product.

what the fuck is flawless entertainment. your post is flawed. 6/10

1- didn't like it in the least
3- didn't completely dislike it, it had a couple nice things done in a sub-par way

And? Just run it through bayesian rating to get proper scale.

This. 15 years ago I'd watch under 5/10s to completion, now I only watch anime I consider an 8 or above, with the occasional 6 or 7

>the reason this happens is that Nips are so talented that even the worst anime series still manage to be a 4-6/10.
Anime might be the worst artistic medium when it comes to average quality, save for maybe video games. there are probably less than 100 anime (including shorts, OVAs, films, etc) that deserve to be called 10/10s. probably less than 400 9/10s too. average seasonal anime doesn't crack a 4.

Getting a failing grade for getting 50% or lower is standard in schools, and that's how many people tend to view things. If it's not bad, then it should be at least 5/10. To get your "B" grade or equivalent (so "good"), you usually need to cross 80%. So that also gives you an intuition behind 8/10 = good.

>unenjoyable
Enjoyability is completely unrelated to quality whatsoever.

>Anilist
use a txt nigger

the average rating i give definitely shouldn't be 5, because i try my best to only pick the series which i think will be above average. i'd rather play a 7/10 game or watch a 7/10 movie than watch a 5/10 anime.

it will only be accurate to you if you're mentally retarded

*the entirety

same shit

Here's the perfected rating system.
>I liked it.
>I didn't like it.
>I didn't see it.
No confusion, no mess, just easy to understand.

I usually give things 10/10 when I can't reasonably expect them to do any better. This accounts for stuff like "Does it look good for the time it was made in?", did they fuck anything up that they really shouldn't have or could have gotten right potentially. Stuff like that. More about potential, intention, and execution than anything else. takes into account my enjoyment too obviously but I try to outright drop stuff I don't enjoy.
On the other end of the spectrum a 1/10 or 0/10 is going to be complete dogshit. Stuff that's has flawed concepts, garbage execution, loads of wasted potential, etc.
I don't normally give out 1s or 10s but it does happen occasionally.
