Eva would be just another obscure forgotten 90s show without the fanbase. The fact that a fanbase can be sustained for decades on 1 season and a few movies is astonishing to me.

The fanbase also get new members every years because a lot of people fucking appreciate it. The show as an universal message and has too many good things inside it, it's not all related to the plot, it goes from character design to ambiance, and a lot of other stuff. Being made on the 90s help a lot because it get a high level of comfyness.

Pic related is an exemple of 90s Comfyness, it come from YuYu Hakusho but Evangelion has a lot of similar things.

OK, so to give you a real world example, think of the Star Wars franchise. The 3 original movies, despite ostensibly being a galaxy-wide conflict, is in fact a very small story about a simple farmer boy who goes on an adventure to escape the boredom of his life, and along the way he learns more about himself, grows up as a person, and finds guidance and goals in his life, goals that are in fact very personal despite the wider implications they have on his world. That's it, that's all there was to them. Then the fans demanded more. They wanted to know every single fucking thing about that effectively small world to a ridiculous degree. They wanted THE LORE, the lore that is in fact irrelevant to the story at the films' heart. And that's how you got the prequels and sequels. They couldn't just focus on that simple core story and let it end at that.

This is what happened to Evangelion. "Where did the Angels come from?", "What are SEELE's identities?", "How do the Eva Units work?", "What are those other branches of NERV?", "What's the politics of their world?", "What is this side character's background?", "WHAT DO ALL THOSE SYMBOLS MEAN??? AND THOSE NAMES??? TELL ME THE CODE ANNO-SAMA!", etc.

Not a single one of those things matter. Yes, not a single one. Yes, really. What does matter then? The drama. The characterisation. The personal arcs. The development and resolution of our main characters. That's all that ever really mattered. The Eva fanbase has built entire wikis around the shit that doesn't matter and pulled in at least most new watchers into that same pointless vortex of obsessively searching for answers for questions that ultimately add nothing to the story or its core messages.

The thing is that Star Wars didn’t continuously bring up new things and names like Eva did then proceed to just ignore them, Eva brings up things like the spear of Longinus and the Dead Sea Scrolls very few times despite them being important parts of the plot, now I’m not saying that anno has to explain every single speck of dust in Eva but when you bring up new names and things into the story then just dump them and give a lecture to your audience don’t expect it to go well.

Another thing about Eva is that it’s a tv series not a movie, Eva in its entirety is 14 hours and a movie, Star Wars (the original trilogy) only has 6 hours

All we needed to know about the Spear of Longinus and the Dead Sea Scrolls was given to us in the show, the former is a weapon that can pierce/dissolve AT Fields and kill Angels, and the latter are ancient documents that foretold the Angels' coming. That's it, that is the whole breadth of information that make them immediately relevant to the story. The lectures you mentioned were given after the show had concluded by the fans' demands, and now go look at the evawiki pages for both of those things. Literally filled to the brim information that add nothing to the story or the messages, they're pointless.
