I used to just go with this shit but I'm kind of sick of it after reading over two dozen where the guy just picks up a slave or the girl is "technically" a slave and for some reason refuses to have her collar/tattoo/contract removed, or there's a slave warrior male, etc.
Feels like an incredibly lazy way to add an ally to the protagonist without introducing them in an event-based way now unless the entire thing is focused on some sort of slave system as a plot mechanism, in which case it's usually dogshit as a story and mediocre for a fap.

I've seen that happen but it's usually a major plot point or some thing where they bulk buy a ton then just release them all at once so it's pretty impersonal and usually just to show that he's a good fellow. And also usually rendered moot because one or two decide to follow him anyways.
