I thought the shigurui manga was better because I like the art, narration, pacing, etc. But I don't think it's particularly uncommon for anime adaptions to be superior to the manga they're adapted from. Usually this happens when the anime just uses the manga as inspiration and the anime writers just happen to be better than the manga author, or the anime is a condensed version that cuts out weaker parts and rearranges others to make a better overall product.
