What do you guys think of Texhnolyze, especially in comparison to Lain and Haibane Renmei? Its very interesting overall, I didnt really care for it at first and almost dropped it, but ended up really liking the last third or so. I think its main problem was having way too many characters and plot points, the vast majority of which have absolutely zero depth whatsoever, and to me, it just didn't really have any emotion until the later parts.

Texhnolyze is an extremely well constructed animation. Anyone who talks about it without talking about the directing style is probably missing the point - the dark and heavy plot points wouldn't stand alone if they weren't backed up by a well-put-together show.
IMO, Lain has interesting ideas, maybe more interesting than Texhnolyze, but nothing in Lain comes close to the style Texhnolyze pulled off. For example, Tex probably has the best sound design of any anime I've ever watched. And it's not just style for style's sake - it's always invested in something which backs up the theme (for example: the POV shots early on that do a great job of separating a more "raw" human experience from the later texhnolyzed experience).
I rewatch it every few years and it always holds up + entertains me.

The animation can be janky sometimes but its excellently storyboarded and colored to set the exact atmosphere its going for. The director has commented on his tendency to not have a lot of movement in his shows despite having backgrounds as an animator as he doesn't like having the animation carry the work in this interview around 26 minutes in
