to add on this while vegeta was back goku was absent, no one could do shit about him even if they wanted to(they were scared of him),once he was back vegeta left for training once again being absent,when he came back goku fell ill and he did whatever he want in android/cell saga.
After that goku DIED and vegeta basically gave up on fighting,there was no reason for gohan to fight vegeta when he wasnt doing anything ++ gohan didnt even see him for a very long time after cell saga.
When goku and vegeta finally met again vegeta did everything opposing the gang he wasnt in it,he was literally AGANIST it for selfish reasons but ofcourse he developed enough to care about his family (which was hinted way back in cell saga so it wasnt just an asspull change in heart).

Because the entire Z crew became mass murderers themselves in chapter 336 "A risky decision" when they all agreed to sacrifice the lives of the civilians for the sake of having a good fight with the androids. Only Bulma and Krillin were against it thus making Goku, Tien, Vegeta, Piccolo and the rest mass murderers as well. Vegeta is simply a pure soul who's honest and does as his nature tells him to do, the rest are hypocrites. He's strong and handsome as well which matters a lot.
