How much do backgrounds mean to you when watching anime?
When was the last time you were truly impressed by what you were seeing?

They help with immersion
Made in Abyss

Old school JC Staff used to make really excellent backgrounds

Mushishi
Every episode had top tier backgrounds

They help establish a shot, a tone, a feeling, a believeability.
The potential for backgrounds to add to every scene is there, but I don't particularly like digital focused ones, full of gradients, 3d models, glare, those type of things, they always come off as tack and cheap to me.

Made in Abyss.
Otherwise if it's a show I don't really pay backgrounds much mind, especially recently cause all I've been watching is Gundam.

Tada-kun wa Koi Shinai. The anime is ok but visually, its very impressive. What really sticks out for me is the MC's house. Usually, your typical anime house is pretty empty, devoid of any human life actually living in them besides the typical TV and sofa set within the four corners of their living room. This anime however, went way beyond that and provide character to each room and give you a sort of an impression what sort of person living in it. Its mundane yeah, at the same time, very human. I appreciate that.

not really, since I spend most of the time reading subtitles instead of actually watching the art

>I spend most of the time reading subtitles instead of actually watching the art
That's the one thing that irks me about subbed shows
Although with anime it's mostly still frames so I don't miss too much

Backgrounds are 80% of the experience

Yeah.

It varies depending on level of detail and how that meshes with the show's artstyle.
The rough and often abstract background art for Grimgar turned out great because of how it surrounded the characters in a scene and provided focus while not just making them exist in a black void.

I can read subtitles wherever I'm looking on the screen. Do you guys prefer dubs? I've always wondered if this was why.

The brother did everything wrong
>Fuck you aunt I'm not doing the chores I'll just run away in the middle of the war and live the hobo life with my sis how hard can it be

>Do you guys prefer dubs?
Oh no way, it's just a minor inconvenience at times.
I usually experience it when there's an exposition dump going on in whatever show I'm watching (I'm looking at you MiA)

England has the fucking worst convenience store sandwhiches

Pardon?

agree

Dorohedoro, the background is amazing

I rewatched Angle's Egg the other day, does that count?

I'd rather they do the foreground properly first.

As long as they don't look like plastic, glossy shit I don't care.

I don't really care since i really don't know what makes a good background, but when I watched Mushishi I remember really liking them for some reason

You begin noticing backgrounds when there are no characters and no dialog. So, they're not really that important, they just put them in there to complete the shot.

Angel's Egg probably has my favorite backgrounds. Really anything by Shichiro Kobayashi is amazing

Backgrounds are everything.

for a show that's all about the characters, and the actual world setting is mostly irrelevant, the backgrounds are great. They're creative without being distracting.

Rewatched Princess Mononoke last night. Drawn artwork is so pleasant to sit and watch.

There are lots of shows with good backgrounds but the most recent one I can remember is Naruto. At least in part 1.
