You can say that it can follow the TV series, but thats ultimately just a cope because at the end of the day it doesn't follow the TV series and no amount of Shirley being irrelevant will change that.

The plot of the movie isn't even that good, and it relies on superficial fanservice. If it didn't end with shipping bait, no one would defend it. Case in point, how the only thing anyone ever praises it for is the shipping and every other context is it being criticized for what it does, how it handles characters, and plenty of other points.
Re;surrection is just as trash as the recap movies.
