Rei is more worthy of Shinji's affections than the other girls, if only for being more honest about her intent to be more than friends with him.

Shinji was gay for Kaworu, fuck those other bitches
I don't think he was gay (though he could be biromantic) but rather desperate for love and more willing to be with a guy who can offer love than a woman who only offers sex. (I'm referring to Misato, of course... Rei could've offered both if she overcame her years of emotional repression before... you know...)
Rei deserved better in the show and EoE, though. Shinji abandoned her after he realized she was a clone, and blamed her for being "ambiguous" with him.
Ban all Evangelion, Haruhi, and all Shonen posters
I literally just finished watching NGE and EoE for the first time yesterday and I don't understand how anyone can waifu Rei or think that Rei belongs with Shinji. Did you miss the part where she's basically a clone of his mom?
How does that not make him gay? Everyone is desperate for love, that doesn't make their love any less genuine.
>Did you miss the part where she's basically a clone of his mom?
...so?
When did Rei ever even give a single impression she wanted to be more than friends with him. She barely wanted to be friends with him (or barely knew how). She did inevitably choose Shinji for instrumentality over Gendo, but that's not the same thing.
Oh yeah let's just care about Gayserk.
He's bi or pan
Yes, he's bisexual. Not "biromantic" or some other made up tumblr sexuality.
How many definitions do you think the phrase "become one with Shinji" could possibly have?
Pansexuality isnt a thing
Perhaps she has a fetish for self-absorbed crybabies?
More like Rei III is not even the Rei he once knew, so of course he felt weird around her, she's a clompletely different person and her friend is dead.
The same thing happened in the manga but Rei III came to remember Rei II's memories and feelings with Shinji's help.
Greetings Reichads. I'm rewatching everything in preparation for the new movie and one last kiss.
I seem to remember this scene appearing in the original anime but it's nowhere to be found in the release I downloaded. In rebuild it happens just before Shinji wakes up after the first fight.
Was this scene in the original show or am I misremembering it?
The scene depicted in OP's picture is the only time Rei II ever says such a thing, and even then the phrasing is ambiguous, as is everything with Rei and Eva. The context of the situation is after the Angel mind rapes her soul into admitting she's lonely, the Angel then seeks out Shinji seemingly acting upon that loneliness. Whether an act of loneliness means that she wants to be more than friends with him is not necessarily congruent. The purpose of the scene is more to showcase that Rei II has changed from the withdrawn figure, whose whole life has been nothing but a farce because she knows that she is just one part of a cog of a system, a series of clones wherein she could be replaced by any of them at any given time, that her life is worthless and not important. It is her admission she wants to live and to be with people and, yes, Shinji's influence is important in this. If anything, it proves she actually wants to be friends with him, rather than the together but isolated existence she's had with him, Asuka, and others. The last thing she sees before she dies is a flash of Gendou in her mind, which makes her cry. Considering the situation, and the general fuckery that goes on with Eva, applying a romantic conclusion to that sequence with her single statement is a bit of a stretch. Eva is more about human interaction and relationships, not necessarily romance.
It definitely was
>Eva is more about human interaction and relationships, not necessarily romance.
Absolutely.
Ep 23. I think this is the remastered version but here you go:
>the Angel mind rapes her soul into admitting she's lonely
It's the angel who admits it's lonely
I was talking about pic related hereIt's just after the scene in which we hear Gendo and Yui talking about their child's name. Gendo says if it's a boy he'll be named Shinji and Rei if it's a girl and then Shinji wakes up
Either way, it is not a showcase of Rei's desire to want to "become one" with Shinji in a romantic sense. Rei is interpreting the Angel's actions to be her own soul's desire, but there's no reason to believe that. The Angel is doing what it is doing regardless. You could say that with the Angel becoming partially fused with Rei that it is partially acting on her desires, but that is the same thing as saying that any action of our id is a reflection of what we really want. Sometimes the id simply wants things, including to drown ourselves in acid, but that is why we have extra layers of mental subconsciousness so that our latent desires don't override reality. The id has no filter and is not a reflection of honesty but instinct. Rei II refusing to allow the Angel to do what it wants is a reflection of those filters; instinct is not what drives humans, and so she consciously refuses that instinctive desire.
Well the picture you have I think is when Shinji tries to pilot Unit 0. Episode 14 I think.
Thanks user. I was convinced it was in episode 2 of the show. Guess it's one of the things the rebuilds did better compared to the original. It's almost like a jumscare and it leaves you thinking what the hell is Rei after seeing her appear for a second and then disappear at the start of the movie.
Now that you brought it up, why did unit 00 go berserk when they made it link up with Shinji?
Not sure. It's one of those mysteries, but the main suspected reason is that neither Shinji nor Asuka could ever synch with Unit-00 (or any other Eva for that matter) because of the nature of the souls contained within Evas. The purpose of the test was to see if Rei could synch with Unit-0, which is the basis behind the Dummy System. If Shinji could synch with Unit-0, it would provide them with a bit of a backup Eva for him just in case, but he couldn't do it. Unit-1 has Yui Ikari's soul, and what they were probably hoping is that Unit-0 contained some fragment of that soul from Rei I, which would allow Shinji to synch with both. But the plan failed.
Didn't unit 00 also had some of Yui's soul and that's why Rei could link up with it?
Er "If Rei could synch with Unit-1" not Unit-0. They purposely do not test any combination of Asuka and Unit-2 with anybody else because it would never work. Shinji having a possibility of synching with Unit-0 is because of Rei I and that's all that could be possible.
Of course, this all calls into question Mari in the Rebuilds, who could synch with Unit-2 easily (and the destroyed Unit-5).
Well, the question of Rei and souls is constantly raised because nobody knows. Rei, being a clone of Yui, and Yui's soul being in Eva 1, implies that whatever soul Rei has is either her own or that a soul can be copied, which might be the true insidious nature of the Dummy System. Of course, whether souls are real or not, and whether the nature of a "soul" in Eva terms is the total encompassing mental existence of someone, is another question that partially might answer the first. If a soul is just the whole of what our brain's configuration is after our lifetime of experiences, thoughts, feelings, and so forth, then that is just information that can be copied. If the soul is something more intangible, then Rei I's soul is not the same as Yui's soul. But, it is stated somewhere, maybe by Rei III, that her soul can just be recovered and downloaded into a new clone. So if Rei I left her soul behind in Unit-0, then what is in Rei II? And if souls are just that mental data, then does this explain why Rei III has most of Rei II inside of her but has issues with some of the memories? Lots of questions, sadly few answers.
In the manga, Rei III remembers all of Rei II's experiences after Shinji helps her do so, but that never overtly happens in the anime, but it is implied that Rei III makes some kind of connection to those feelings because she rejects Gendou during instrumentality, seemingly for no reason. The only reason that is acceptable is if she chose Shinji because she remembered her previous clone's feelings.
