I miss his old style. His current style is open and airy. It seemed to have changed during Last Order. I assume the reason is the switch to a bimonthly magazine from a monthly one, but maybe he just doesn't care about doing all that detail now.

Biweekly from weekly you mean. On his blog he says it's mostly due to switching to digital though. Personally I think it suits the higher-fantasy direction the series has gone.

It's funny how I hate the genre sci-fi, but Gunnm is such a monument that I put it in my top 2.

I started to read Gunnm recently and I asked because wanted to be sure if it was so defining as it looks.
The influences on many works, from Final Fantasy VII to Blame! and Mega-Man, are notable.

It only takes about 10-15 years of drawing for someone who normally starts drawing as a kid for them to reach their peak.

At that time they have the skill and the youthful energy to put a lot of effort into their art.

After that when the arrtist gets to 40 or 50 they don't have the energy and stamina in them to concentrate for so long on the detail and getting things just right and it's all down hill from there.
