Feudalism and Samurai's are fetishized in culture while everything was actually fucked in reality.

Also I believe it is an adaption of a larger story where the two main character's in Shigurui are just side characters if I'm not mistaken.

this is the shit that makes the story fall short for me. worldbuilding and introducing characters is nice but damn near every chapter there was a new face and its getting tedious to keep up with so many names/people. its not hard just annoying to have an overloaded cast but the entire story is ONLY about two people.

if you really did you would like it because it's damn good. But I guess not everyone can have good taste.

The worst ending of all time ever is Negima.

she told him she loved hm because he told her he renounced being a samurai and would live to fight and die.

he wins that match and then gets told by the lord to make sure his opponent's dead by beheading to have the honor of a samurai. he freezes and realizes he does in fact want to be a samurai, is giddy he'll have his honor restored and she realizes she threw her life away following him for nothing.

I think in the book he dies from his wounds a short time later. The other irony is in the book Shigurui was based on their fight was like a footnote in the beginning chapters as people enjoyed watching the cripples fight.

Do yourself a favor and read books instead of manga. If you don't get the appeal of even Shigurui then you are simply reading the wrong medium.

the only tragedy ending manga or anime i can remember is angel beats and i barely remember that. i need to read more but im in the middle of usogui right now so i want to finish that. im just not really sold on the landing of shigurui. build up to the tournament fight was good but the fight itself was 2 chapters? not that eventful and irako vs kogan had better art and was more intense. majority of the good moments in this manga came from irako and gennosuke felt more like a side character. gennosuke doesnt feel like a main character until the end of the manga when he starts to be the main focus. its just an average story with god tier art.

Found it. Kaina - Surugajou Gozen-Jiai is the manga adaption of Surugajou Gozen-Jiai which features a one arm warrior and cripple warrior which Shigurui is based on.

It really isn't an enjoyable manga, but I'm glad I read it if it makes sense. I was really disappointed too when I finished it. But it's one of those things you look back on and kind of appreciate the more you think about it,

It's pretty simple. Gennosuke was able to get rid of the ghost that was haunting him by defeating Seigen. Seigen is free and to some degree, he is happy Fujiki ended his suffering, Lady Iku also commits suicide to escape the pain and suffering, similar to Irako.
The problem comes after Tokugawa orders Fujiki to cut the head of Irako, Gennosuke doesn't want to disrespect his rival (and even friend), he transforms into a slave again. For Mie, Gennosuke is now forever tainted, another slave that will do what he is ordered, she decides to end her life, Fujiki ends completely alone and destroyed emotionally.

Same. I may not have enjoyed the ending but the ride itself wasn't that bad and the characters were grounded enough to relate to their morals. I really enjoyed everything besides the last 2 volumes. It just didnt end how i thought it would.
