The beginning of the manga is different...The revival process takes a lot longer. Yusuke and Botan go around while Yusuke does a bunch of good deeds in ghost form trying to nurture that egg - the story with that sayaka girl is completely different, she's just some dead girl they meet that tags along with them for a while, not some investigator or whatever it was

This really was already giving me Yu-Gi-Oh! vibes... so they're real. YGO also had a drastically different beginning that didn't make it into the anime and it also had the unconscious female MC being almost raped, but that only made it as a very different 2 minutes scene

You're right though, there were a few decent chapters though it's mostly just slice of life comfy stuff..Instead they streamlined the shounen stuff which really wasn't a terrible choice or anything at all really
I wouldn't worry about it, the anime adaptation for Yu Yu is exceptional, btw are you watching dub or sub? You cant really go wrong with either but even many ret/a/rds will tell you to watch dub

Subbed, I didn't want to break my only-subs rule even if the dub was everywhere. I like how Yusuke sounds like an actual kid, I'd expect them to give him a tough adult-ish voice given he's a delinquent.
Also Kuwabara's ORRRAAAA and TEEMEEE would be too good to pass up, I like these kind of funny thugs in anime, and Botan is a 11/10 cutie.

I was watching Yu Yu in the early 2000s, buying the chapter black DVDs in eng dub as they were releasing every month or two while I was in middle school and I straight up dropped the show at like episode 94 or 95 and didn't even finish it till like 10 years later
