Is the being protected by a doting older brother fantasy a thing now, or is there some deeper, pseudo-Freudian bullshit going on under the surface there, such as Nezuko's demon curse being a metaphor for PMS and Tajiro being like a kind, understanding boyfriend who doesn't mind being snarled at once in a while?

The thing you need to remember is that most anime is just advertisement for other mediums. The popularity just shows how incredibly effective the TV show was at creating a real marketing phenomenon.

Only time will tell. It is too hard to predict this kind of stuff. We should expect clones. And if those easily surpass KnY (not necessarily in sales), then it will quickly be forgotten as flavor of the year. If not, then it will stand as a nostalgic artifact for a long time.

Consider that before Super and even after the movie there was no Dragon Ball General but now there is one.

Despite how huge and popular DragonBall was it being dead several years basically killed its on board popularity, and I know a shit ton of people who've been watching anime for decades who never bothered to watch the whole DBZ anime.
