Help me biz

I lost 4 words of my 24 seed phrase. Had it written down on a piece of paper at the bottom of my drawer and my gf put it in the bin thinking it was trash. The paper got wet and I can’t make out 4 of the words. What do I do?

still have your password? buy a new ledger and send anything you had on to the new one. do a test send of the smallest amount you can send first to make sure its working in and out just in case. make sure it isnt tampered with its better to get it from the vendor rather than from third parties.

then when you get your new one, you save your seed words better and keep everything offline, dont put anything on anything digital.

ENVY SNOW MATURE UMBRELA

try btcrecover software

it's only 2048^4 combinations, should be able to brute force it.

Here's the list, use python

github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039/english.txt

use web3py to generate wallets

There are only so many words that are used. Turn on your inner NCIS

If you still have access to your ledger then move your crypto to a new wallet, and don't lose the seed. If you don't have access to your ledger you are fucked.

PIANO TRUNK PLANET CELLULITE

Sucks but you have to transfer now. Get a second ledger, generate new seed, send everything over. This time get a steel plate, some punches, and a jewelers die/anvil thingy. All of $40 on Amazon and will survive a fire. Maybe titanium if you want to be extra. Give the bitch a nice whooping tonight + a couple extra smacks for me.
Keep a second copy of the seed in a remote place, maybe buried on family property somewhere you can find with ease years later. Tell them it's a time capsule with mementos of your Xth anniversary, if you decide to keep her after pulling such a stunt.

Gonna have to move your holdings to a temporary wallet and reinitialise your ledger. Today I imprinted my seed on a thick strap of leather. Very resistant to damage over time.

ENHANCE

I’ve literally never lost my now ~$400,000 worth of funds in four years of holding on exchanges. It’s nowhere near as unsafe as people make it out to be. You’re more likely to fuck up holding yourself.
I know people here hate BANKS AND DA JOOS but there’s a reason people don’t keep their money under a mattress anymore and keep it at the bank. Because if the bank fucks up they are obligated to cover your balance up to $250k. Coinbase has a similar policy.

Bruteforce it there aren't that many combinations if you're only missing 4 words.

I would recover it for you using a brute force script, if wont take that long if its only 4.

Problem is, how could you trust me to give you back the funds?
I wonder if we could use a smart contract for that...

Any how, you probably wont trust me (as you should), so nothing I can do...
Learn programming and DIY, or pay a trusted party to do it for you.

>John Stuart Mill, a friend of Carlyle's, found himself caught up in other projects and unable to meet the terms of a contract he had signed with his publisher for a history of the French Revolution. Mill proposed that Carlyle produce the work instead; Mill even sent his friend a library of books and other materials concerning the Revolution, and by 1834 Carlyle was working furiously on the project. When he had completed the first volume, Carlyle sent his only complete manuscript to Mill. While in Mill's care the manuscript was destroyed, according to Mill by a careless household maid who mistook it for trash and used it as a firelighter. Carlyle then rewrote the entire manuscript, achieving what he described as a book that came "direct and flamingly from the heart."
History really does repeat itself.

Women carelessly destroy what men create.

>just brute force 17,592,186,044,416 possible combinations
Anybody got the math on the expected success time (other than just halving the number)?

So I can brute force it? How long would it take?

For everyone asking I wiped my ledger clean to prevent myself from having the temptation to sell. I’m so fucked.

A minute or two at most

NGMI

You wiped your ledger and only had one copy of the seed phrase and you kept it in your sock drawer with your nutsock?

Are you a retard
Why the fuck dude
Anyway, you need to learn programming, and brute force the last four words. Not that bad. Be thankful you still have the other twenty and know their positions

If this isn't a larp, see if you can see the pen impressions on the paper. Get some tissue paper and a rubbing pencil and get to work

Further more, there are 2048 words in the BIP39 Wordlist, and the subset we care about is 4, that gives us 730,862,190,080 possible permutations.

Not doable by hand, but certainly by a computer.

Now, you may try to narrow the 2048 list, no words are repeated, so you can scratch 20. You could try to read possible letters in the illegible words and add similar words to the pool, this would only work if you can id at least one letter in each of the 4 words.

this is it, you have to buy a new ledger. don't forget your god damn pin or youre fucked

Could narrow it down by length of word too

If by any chance you live in Sydney, I would not mind having a look in person.

you buy another wallet and transfer. The costs are you penance

true

if you have your device and pin, send all your coins to a different wallet. Like make a metamask and send all their ethereum shit there. Get all your coins off of that wallet and then reset it. Write down your new seed in a few places and then send it all to your NEW ADDRESSES. Don't send them to your old addresses because you were lose everything.

did you read the OP, he does NOT have his private key, just the mnemonic seed minus 4 words.

The mnemonic seed is the private key, the pin to the device is not the private key

he wiped the ledger
