I've been burned with the imminent COMEX collapse, gold backed Yuan, USD reserve collapse, etc. memes too many times to still give them much energy. I stack as a real way to save that slays any savings account, CD, bond. If metals moon (for whatever reason), it'll be great, but I don't need a SHTF scenario to make stacking a solid move.

Like Hemke said, they aren't stupid, they essentially will just stop shorting beyond what a normal trading desk would do and allow their mark to market to rise. We already saw where the speculators were vs where the investors were.
