Mark (guy who writes medium articles) announced that there's an AMA soon. Given that they've also done node registration, I'd reckon that mainnet is coming very, very soon. Probably within a few weeks.

It obviously hasn't been rushed. They were able to launch it a couple of months ago but they decide to test it some more an triple checked everything. But yes, the reason why it has taken so long is because they actually need it to scale and work properly because it's actually going to be used.
