It's ingrained in the economy. Whenever things like socialized healthcare are mentioned, we are wired into believing it's bad. Even though there is objective empirical evidence that proves that these systems can work and provide much better value.
The US' ethos is centered around an "all or nothing" mentality, a mentality of earning a living dependent entirely on your own abilities and without the government or anyone else standing in your way or interfering. There are little ironies and hypocrisies mixed in here. Much of the rest of the world has a vastly different philosophy that is much more centered around "all for one". Asian countries certainly. European countries as well (European countries are more "socialistic", however they also provide a better standard of living for the entire population, opposed to a huge wealth gap. This is why the US is commonly viewed by the rest of the world as being loud and pushy, but naive.
Obviously you can find flaws in the US system, there are plenty, but it has led to much progress.
