The government already spends billions and billions of dollars on totally non-essential bullshit like an imperialist military, and on essential (but classist, due to what it omits) shit like bailing out banks and the stock market. They could also eradicate poverty and homelessness too, give everyone a universal basic income, but no, they don't give a shit. Of course, they inevitably will introduce basic income, they have no choice...automation will only eradicate more jobs, and there's no law of the universe where for every job replaced by a machine there must be one that could be created for a human in its place. At a certain point we'll just run out of shit to do, and so either millions of people will starve to death or we'll get basic income. The starving to death part is plausible, but the sheer number of people involved would likely drive them to violent revolution given no alternative, and so it's in the best interest of the governments of the world to implement basic income instead of just collapse into mass death and murder for everyone including the rich.
