Having graduated high school, my original plan was to attend university for a degree in graphic design, which I've been pursuing amatuerly for a few years now. I know the liberal arts degree meme but I felt like this is a more marketable skill, especially for advertising. I was accepted to UH, but I'm taking a semester off to take some core classes at a community college.
Question is, should I give up on that and just go to trade school for welding or some shit? I don't want to be scammed for a degree I might not be able to use.
Is University a Scam?
>graphic design
if you're not a coke-off-a-park-bench hyper-extrovert that knows how to use their contacts for cash, ngmi
I figured. What is the alternative?
Graphic design is an art degree... You can just build a portfolio yourself that would get you a job.
Exactly why Im second guessing. I feel like Id be throwing my money away on a degree that wont help me in that field very much
How much does it cost?
University is worth it for STEM or if you're a popular chad doing networking.
For art you'll be better off having a portfolio and doing collabs. College is good for the latter though.
Definitely don't go for graphic design. Only for stem/medical
I was going to go to university, and I completed a year. (CS degree) Decided I’m probably going to drop out to join the national guard. I wanna become an air traffic controller.
Most Graphics design jobs don't require education they just want 3-8yrs experience now. My sister got a job with GD without any relevant degree. She told me these jobs don't exist in most places anymore but because she has other skills in many different areas she has a job.
OP, stay away from this dead end job with no rewards and back breaking student loans. Get a skill that guarantees money.
Wise choice. CS aside from being extremely difficult has been outsourced.
OP, if you’re into design try and and get into UX/UI or product design
How hard is it to get a bachelor's? I dropped out 3 years into a biology degree because I couldn't into calculus
its a jewish scam
Thanks for the advice.
Im not very passionate about STEM, I couldn't see myself doing that for the rest of my life
yes it would be throwing your money away, just like how going to school to learn how to code would be throwing your money away. these can both be done without wasting time and money in college. build a good portfolio / website so you can showcase your graphic designs, then go fish for jobs. when they ask if you have a college degree you say no, I spent time learning it on my own and build this and this and that and that.
going to college is a meme for most professions these days . you can learn it all online by yourself, and if you can't it means you are retarded.
go to uni if you want to have sex. unironically no other reason is justifiable
Where can somebody find a good source of information to learn online? Youtube tutorials are getting old and don't offer more in-depth content
ok if I was going to become a graphic designer. this is what I would do
- Make LinkedIn profile
- Build simple html portfolio website
- Do small graphic jobs for crypto (fiverr tier)
~ on Linkedin find some grafic designer profiles and add them, also find out about graphic design companies or illustration / advertisment companies, look at what skills their job offers require, LEARN THOSE SKILLS.
do the above for 3 years, build an online presence in the "graphical designer scene" (whatever that is)
just spend atleast 8 hours a week working on your grafic design network / site / skills for 2 years. THen you will have build and networked enough to have attractive skills and profile to hire,
boom its done, you get hired without the college jew
Thank you for the genuine advice. Do you think this is possible while pursuing a career elsewhere? What do you do for a living?
if you can, try to look for a low minimum wage job where there is a chance you can do graphic design.
if it wasn't corona time, I would say you can look around doing graphic design for festivals ad student parties.
theres tons of options, just be smart about it you need to build a portfolio, you can even do a job for free if you except there will be grafic design shit opportunities there, its all about building that resume and linkedin / experience.
HR whores are fucking stupid so thats all they look at.
another thing comes up, do grafic design for starting DJ and music producers. do it for free even. they build some music and spread it with your covers, you put your site somewhere or your reference.
Yes. you can look for other jobs thats actually smart. work something else for money while you are building your network / success in grafic design experience ( you get what i mean by now ) look out for companies that MIGHT have grafic design options available. Like for example that fancy pancy restaurant/bar in town, they need a steward/waiter/helper for on saturday evenings, you take that job and then you work there for a bit, eventually you suggest you want to make a poster or help with advertising the business for them.
University is not a scam unless you graduate engineering, physics, medical, or business. Even then, you should go to a top ten and be top of your class to make it. Going to university for graphic design is a scam
What do you do for a living?
>What do you do for a living?
Currently I work as in between bussiness and IT. I used to work as devops but fuck working hard so I quit, but I'm also going to quit this job soon cause it sucks too. eventhough I work very little.
I actually want to pull a Jesus and quit the ratrace. I just don'tt know how yet. I have a good stack of crypto.
I want to work in a recycling plant or something next. I just want to feel that my job is useful. I hate the office building and cuck administrative email bullshit, excel bullshit, coding bullshit. its all shit.
I just want to Jesus and meditate, workout and self improve all day.
Scam-tier:
>big name university with massive sports program
>majoring in English/Social Work/Philosophy/Film/Communications/Journalism
>living on campus
Actually worth it tier:
>doing all of your basic requirement classes at a local community college
>majoring in: accounting, science, math/statistics, engineering, chemistry
>staying in-state and living off campus once you've done 2 years at community
You basically have to be a retard and make all the wrong decisions to make college not worth it.
Don’t do it
No for medical. Medicine is a joke now and physicians are underpaid, overworked, and are being phased out by payers.
you could say my Job is advicing people on the internet.
I also advice you to stop watching porn and start meditating.
peace out.
>graduate engineering, physics, medical, or business. Even then, you should go to a top ten and be top of your class to make it.
Yup if you're "only" above average in your class forget about it. My gf double majored in chemical engineering and math.
She works as a tutor making $17/hr.
Don't do it OP.
Good advice, thank you
no problem buddy.
I am happy when people make it.
I am happy to share my advice its usually good.
Knowing the universe will reward me back, maybe not in money but who cares. I am comfortable with my situation.
You reap what you sow.
Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are the seeds. Will you grow flowers, or will you grow weeds?
if I was much younger I would maybe have picted something like grafic designer too but I'm le 30 year old boomer now. I am too lazy to really put effort into building networks and all that. I also deleted all my social media and such because... Ehm yeah because it was limiting my growth.
if you are going for a grafic designer job though having a strong social media presence is probably a good idea.
Maybe, but nurse still seems like a good investment. I've met some borderline retarded nurses who made 6 figures
