How can I tell if roomie is Crypto-Mining on shared electric bill?

And shared WiFi.

Does Crypto-Mining require CONSTANT WiFi connection?

How big a PIA is it to set up? Would it be feasible for say an employee to bring a Miner Box to work to use employer's power and WiFi?

Land Lord has all the bills in their name and divides up if they go over certain amount. After this one kinda...hard to describe it but don't trust him....guy moves in the bills seem to be climbing and climbing.

LL is pretty good and NOT gonna want to do "room search" and certainly not without SOP legal 24hrs notice, and wouldn't know WTF to look for anyways. (I'm gonna need to tell LL WTF "crypto-mining" is and hopefully their college kid will explain).

Can or do ISPs stop Crypto-Mining on request?

Is Crypto-Mining something employees will try to do at work? Shouldn't it be rampant anytime someone's electric bill isn't going 100% to them personally and its a "tragedy of the commons" situation like college dorms?

WTF about these PG&E new "Smart Meters" that are supposed to be able to know when you eat and shit? Will they just see constant use round the clock? Would THAT be good indicator because while refrigerators are a big draw, they will cycle on and off so even if you got 3 big ones you SHOULD see periods of low to no draw at night when everyone is asleep and no valid reason for 1000W draws.

I guess I can tell LL to get all the Smart Meter data and tell other roomies to unplug any big draws and see if we still got 1000-2000W draws. Or maybe I can just look at our meter in wee hours of morning.

you are so fucking autistic

is your power bill >$200???

if not then shut the fuck up you idiot!

Bridge your wireless card and your network card, turn your wireless card into a wifi hotspot, spoof the SSID of your router, and perform a man in the middle attack, run wireshark and collect the packets and analyze them.

>mining in your bedroom
>in 2020

based and also correct

If you didn't pay the bills, why not? Even if the profit is small, its still all profit lmao

There is no profit in it.

use to be about $150 total but has climbed to now over $700. This has never happened in past years even with summer and AC etc. Nor does it go down in mild months without heat or AC like it always did.

Yeah just do this dummy

I'm seeing about an extra $600 in electric, always electric, not gas. So that should be about same in Crypto-Mining which would be about exactly "covers my rent" which would be a perfect fit for this personality.

Sure it's not a room full of weedplants? Why do you assume crypto? Take a look at the guy. I bet he has a indoor canabish farm

>Bridge your wireless card and your network card
Yes he is also the only person that smokes pot but its only a normal size room and I can't imagine there being enough room for lots of plants, and doesn't seem up his alley to nurture growing things effectively.

Just tell your roommate that these bills don't make sense and you're gonna ask the landlord to see if there is something broken with the electricity hookups, to check if you're being overcharged for something. Then watch if it goes down later or he fesses up.

interesting, but I can't even tell if you are pulling my leg.

About what would that COST to have someone do, like someone off Craigslist etc?

I'd expect him to remove the equipment and bring it back, since don't know of any good way to show just that room is drawing the extra $600/month.

Plus we got the stupid Covid eviction ban. Not sure if that applies for room rentals.

But I guess that would be a way to flush out any Pot Grow operation.

But I'm still thinking Crypto Mining.

I'm I on any possible "right track" with Crypto Mining? Does it MAKE SENSE that someone would be converting $600 worth of extra electric bill into similar amount of money? Would the investment in equipment be semi-justified?

Assume you are sort of a weasel who doesn't do anything all day, even prior to Lock Down and WFH just want to drink beer, smoke pot, eat junk and play videos.

lmao, that's where you're wrong. A 1.2by1.2 (non retarded units) with a 600hps can run some 400yuros a month

I stand corrected and my experts now say "yo dumbass, they ain't growing 10ft plants like in the 1970s".

But I'm still thinking crypto after googling Roommates Crypto led me to this (may Allah forgive me) Redit thread

Unless this nigga is running multiple machines there's no way it's just from mining.

My GPUs use like 200 kilowatt hours a piece and I run three and there's been barely a change in my electric bill. To be fair I pay 0.05 USD per kilowatt hour.

profile matches what I'm seeing in threads dating back several years. Maybe those are his previous addresses. lol.

one thing about this LL....they don't ask for references just that you can show income or funds.

We pay about .30KWH.

WTF you pay .05? Is that just you on some "lifeline" plan?

AFAIK PG&E plans that charge higher rates for more use are same for one retired person in a "single family dwelling" as a Jr McMansion rented to 6 adults all with their own TV and PC and laundry.

I'm in IT, this can be done in an hour easy but expect to pay a few hundred. No equipment needed. Analysis comes extra I guess, 500 and we've got a deal.

PS-its definately slowly but surely increased, so I figure more is being added every other month or some.

getting Frog Boiled.

I live in a pretty based state. I mean it's probably slightly more with all the other fees they sneak in there but again I don't really notice. But again unless he's running a massive operation there's no way he's hitting 600 dollars purely from mining.

I'm in SF bay area, and I don't see even top tier analysis pinning it on any particular person unless they gave their PC their own name or something.

Any chance of you giving detailed instructions or link to same, for the good of Mankind and shit?

I think for $600 in power for mining equipment his room would sound like a blow dryer.
I say weed operation with old-ass lamps. Tell him to reimburse your money and then get some led growlights.

2.2KW*$0.3 * 24hrs *30 days is about $475 and only costs $1200

No clue WTF 'profit' that works out to but rough guess is bit LESS that what it costs everyone else in Elect Bill at our fairly high rates, but still enough to make running a few "profitable" for the $1200 investment per unit within less than a year, and "all gravy" after that.

Also jibs with multi threads dating back at least a few years actual cases.

These will put you on the right track, it isn't easy but you can find out what data is being sent between hosts this way, you also need to filter the output because you will see a lot of traffic. Dive in to relevant packets and find out what type of information you are looking for to build a case against him. Good luck.

you'd think but that was never even remarked on in other Actual Case Studies.

There do exist cooling devices installed in computer rooms (like when its a closet in an old mansion) that somehow work purely via electricity without any Heat Exchange or venting, just power cables and IIRC they are VERY quiet.
Moved and converted house at Stanford U. has one, its about 1x1x4ft and mounted up on wall in computer server closet. Probably costs lot. House itself has no A/C

>relevant packets
WTF would "relevant packets" look like VS normal WWW traffic?

Don't worry, its going to be uphill getting my LL to wrap their head around the whole Crypto thing and how someone could turn juice into money over the WWW. Trying to show them certain "packets" are supposed to be proofs a non-starter, but maybe they'd have their own expert.

Going to change your life

Buy a few of these for every AC you use (every shared appliance you use too if you like): amazon.com/P3-P4400-Electricity-Usage-Monitor/dp/B00009MDBU

The remainder (what is not shown on yours & the monitors for shared appliances) is their responsibility.

interesting, but not a practical solution as plug ins in this case.

I'm sorta wondering WTF it would cost to have Main Panel out fitted with individual breaker meters which I assume go by rooms. LL is pretty good and doesn't shy away from capital outlay if a good reason. I'm sure it would be a couple Gs, but that is what is going to be stolen from other roomies within a year or less.
