3D modelling as a job

Hey frens, I've started learning 3d modelling 2 months ago hoping that one day I can find a couple of freelancing jobs or even land a job in a high profile studio

How is the marketing going nowadays?

also, whaddya guys think about this star destroyer I just made? Do I have talent? If crypto fails, will I be able to make a living with this in the future?

What is this? A Star Destroyer for giraffes?

what do you mean? lmao

what can I change? I am open to criticism

>also, whaddya guys think about this star destroyer I just made?
It's untextured and it's not an original creation. 3d modelling is definitely viable to some extent, but you have to know who is buying and adjust accordingly. The lowpoly meme still strong.

Oh, I know, I'm still studying and shit, just made it to test myself on key shortcuts and modelling in general

by "lowpoly meme" you mean indie gamedevs making generic mobile games?

3d modelling will soon be automated.

your models fucking suck and you're ngmi

by AI?

bullshit

The elite will no longer require your, or anybody else's services. Get rekt human!

3D modeling is highly competitive. Get on youtube and start watching tutorials and practicing. You're pic is good for a 1st attempt but it needs lots of detail. Also, look into rigging as that'll help you build your models for the riggers and then the animators.

And the proportions are slightly off which professionals would get perfect. You can add an image into your modeling environment as a reference. In maya I think its a plane with the image as a texture.

yeah, I've been following Blender Guru and Imphenzia, they have some great tutorials

I learned the basics of rigging, was able to make a small skeleton but it was buggy as fuck, it's next on my to-do learning list

Thank you for the constructive criticism king, for real

I’ve been modelling for about 15 years now user. Currently working at an architecture firm.
I would HIGHLY recommend doing anything else. Modelling is getting easier and demand for modellers is drying up. It’s a job that demand is decreasing and automation is increasing.
I can model something today in a day that would’ve taken a month ten years ago. Unironcly getting into it as a job was a huge mistake and I wish I could go back and change it.
Do it as a hobby and do something else for money

holy fuck

Is it really that bad?

>by "lowpoly meme" you mean indie gamedevs making generic mobile games?
Sorta, but also AESTHETIC pixelated stuff, retro-PS1, like pic rel. There are still inept gamedevs out there willing to shill out money for a few cute models even if they never turn into games.

interesting...

most modern games are used with sensors, the same way they can make accurate movements i dont see why they couldnt stick 100 sensors on a car to make it accurate in a 3d form

No seriously. A lot of game assets and scene elements are going to be automated within a few years. Sure there will still be point for user injected creativity but a lot of the actual modeling and arrangements of elements in a scene is going to be AI driven

I was made redundant last month. I was lucky since I have so much experience and got another job but out of all my colleges (bout 7 of us) that were made redundant, I am the only one to get another job.
It’s all up to you user. Also depends on where you live and your age. If you’re at that level of modelling and your in your early teens then awesome.
But yeah, it’s shit. Every kid and their moms can 3D model these days. It’s all become too easy

Do Grant Abbit's beginner blender series. Seriously the best for laying foundation.

fuck, I'm 22 actually, so am I too late?

fuck... I postponed it too much

I heard about him, will look his channel up, thank you!

fuck...

It's a fantastic way to spend your nights and weekends. The human brain needs to be creative and so on, just don't put all your eggs in that basket.

yeah, that's actually great advice

Need to take it slow, huh?

I started when I was in high school for reference. I think when I was about 15.

What you need to do is combine your modelling with something else. That’s what makes you valuable.
Try looking into rendering or marketing. If you can 3D model a scene and produce photo realistic renders you can freelance and get paid 5k+ for a image.
You can 3D model diagrams for accountants and shit but you need to know how to make the mode look good and how to convey what they want.

It’s never too late to start user. I’ve started learning piano during lockdown here and am having a blast. Do what you love and it won’t matter about money. You can always trade on the side

3d modeling is tier 1 with CAD in mind. Fuck your artsy shit, go the technical route

thank you, kinda panicked there for a moment

Always wanted to try and only during lockdown I got the balls to do it, at least I gotta see how far I can go with it

Yeah user, it’s hella fun. Just keep practicing and try just making some things. Just rendering a scene or making a movie cover or something.

You’ll only get better and if you enjoy it that’s awesome. That’s why I still do it

I actually used some of my first freelance money to get into crypto years ago so I can live off that. So modelling might not be your biggest earner, but you can use money to make money.

Good luck fren

I love this art style, gj user.

Haha I'm an aerospace/super conducter industry welder who was thinking about fomoing into design.. might still just for the skill set, but what's your setup like? I work 3 12's, get paid a full 40. Can pick up ot and make about 80k a yr

That's not mine, just using it as an example of a style that is fairly popular right now.
