I worked as a temp worker on nights (11am to 7am) at a food factory over a summer to pay for tuition, and the thing I noticed was almost all of the fulltimers were in theirs 50s and 60s, maybe a handful in their 70s or older. They were paid pretty close to minimum wage, only slightly more because it was overnight.
I talked to some of them, one guy did car road shows all this life, another dude was in construction and was missing a finger, but all of them were poor and working in this shitty factory.
I don't understand how people like that managed to live so long, worked through the greatest economic growth period of the world, and not saved enough to retire. Still living hand to mouth while their bodies fall apart, I actually heard the angry old lady that did my onboarding died a few years after I left.
Cost of living used to be so much better, jobs used to pay relatively way more, and yet here they were, decades more of experience, decades more of opportunities, living the consequences of their adult lives, no more financially better off than a kid out of high school.
I don't know what's to be learned from all of that. Maybe it was worth it for some of them, to live a life of fun instead of financial security, or maybe they had to support people and could never afford to save, I guess everyone's situation is different. Maybe the lesson is some people really are cattle. Or maybe that some people are dumb and make dumb decisions so they deserve to be poor. I just hope I never end up in their situation.
