Buying calls and puts is gambling, which is fine if you know where the stock is going to go. The + is it leverages your position, the - is that your investment goes to 0 with time if you're wrong.
Selling covered calls and puts is how you generate income in a stagnant market.
You can sell calls on a stock you own so that even if the market doesn't go up, you still make money. If the market does go up, you still make money from the sale and the premium, but maybe don't make as much money as you would have made just holding the stock. Do this is a crab market.
Selling puts is dangerous if you're not positive a company is rock solid. If you are sure, selling puts can be used like a limit buy that you get paid to do. Again, you want to do it in a crab market because if the price gets TOO low, someone will off their bags on you.
