Obviously the more or less money you have to play with the more you can bend these rule, i.e if you have $5MM and spend 10% of your net worth on cars, you're still worth $4.5MM and your spending power is about the same. Same as if you're worth $100 and buy a $10 casio, sure it's a 10% of your net worth but this doesn't really matter because you're in roughly the same position. Whereas if you're worth $100k and spend, say $15k on a car, you price yourself out of things like property, investments and loans.
