No, they aren't really more productive, they just spend huge amount of time at work.
Part of it is that you cannot go home before the boss does, or before whoever is in charge says "okay guys, job well done, now we can go home".
If you're in some white collar job, chances are that person is some man in his 50s who didn't have a meaningful conversation with his wife and children in the last 10 years. He'll keep everyone at the office past 5, even just sitting in his office, browsing the internet or relaxing, basically doing in the office what he should be doing at home.
Meanwhile, employees are sitting there wasting time too. If you stand up and say "Okay boss, I'll go home now, see ya tommorow", he'll either be pissed or you'll start having the reputation of a bad worker, someone with no dedication, etc.
He can also decide everyone needs to go drinking, for team building and shit. Again, if you don't go, you're the weird one, people start being distant with you, and eventually you're kicked from the job.
I know this american guy who teaches english in some japan elementary school, and one time there was this kid who slightly hurt its knee at recess. The principal and the whole teacher staff had to stay in a meeting until 8 pm, to discuss and braindstorm solutions to avoid this happening again.

Them working hard benefits all of them. Unlike in Europe or America, where your boss is some jew who doesn't care about you and has no relation to you. If you live in Europe of America, go work for a small business run by a white guy (assuming you're white) and you will see the difference. You are treated with respect and cared for. My work is like this. The ceo hates wfh even though we are a software company. Even with the pandemic they try to get everyone back as fast as possible even though it doesn't actually affect devs.
They would rather you sit at your desk and appear to work, rather than work at home. Even if you brought your laptop home each day and work 55 hour weeks. If you are 20 minutes late, the rage of God comes down on you.

My small company boomed from people buying much more online this year because of quarantine. I'm getting a 10% salary bonus because I worked in medication manufacturing, QC lab analysis, and order picking to meet demand. 60 hours average with not a single minute of down time.
It feels good, and there is no pretense. Someone always says let's get the fuck outa here at the end of the day. We go drinking sometimes too, but not because we have to like the Japanese.
