What I don't understand is how you can work that much and still not be rich. Like honestly if you just live off beans and rice, sleep in your car, shower at the nearest YMCA, and put all your excess money into chainlink or bitcoin you'd have enough to get an apartment and never have to work in just a few years. If you continued this lifestyle for 10 years which should be fine for a marine, you would easily have a few million dollars.

In some ways, good for him. The military can be a legitimate way to lift yourself out of poverty (either ROTC for 4 years or enlisted -> GI Bill degree). Both sides of my family have examples of this, my mom's family worked on a farm and my father's family worked in steel mills (both retired on six-figure military pensions).

That said, the military enforces certain character traits that makes people more obedient to authority, which can lead people into having dead-end jobs because they don't believe that fighting or venturing on their own will be successful. Hard work by itself isn't sufficient.

As a non-burger it really baffles me why anyone would go into service, do a few years and fuck right off, instead of pursue a career in the most bloated, technologically advanced, juggernaut of an army the world has ever seen. You basically have unlimited job security, and if you're not in active deployment the worst thing that can happen is you get your ass chewed off for being a slob, and that's if you're a grunt. If you move up the ladder I imagine it's one of the cushiest jobs in the world.
