I live in burgerland where all medical services are overpriced to the point that they're essentially a scam, and I think I just cracked a tooth. Definite nerve pain. I don't have insurance and I doubt it would help much anyway. Not a total poorfag, but I'd feel stupid spending 4 figures on this. If I'm paying cash upfront, should I just call around and try to negotiate? What's the best play?
Zig Forums related because I promise I'll buy a Krugerrand with the money I save. Bonus points if anyone knows a reasonable alternative to root canals, since they're probably bad for you.
dental insurance isn't a scam. Its super cheap actually. Costs me $3 a month through work.
Best advice, get a job with insurance for a few months. Sign up for dental. Go crazy at the dentist for a few months. quit job.

>I live in burgerland where all medical services are overpriced to the point that they're essentially a scam If they're overpriced then you are making a smart financial decision by not paying for them. I don't understand your outrage.
> I think I just cracked a tooth. Definite nerve pain. Wait a week or two. There's nothing you can lose by waiting, it's not like a wound that could be infected and needs immediate treatment. You will be able to assess the pain better. You might actually be fine.
> Not a total poorfag, but I'd feel stupid spending 4 figures on this. 4 figures as in $1k? It's not too bad.
> If I'm paying cash upfront, should I just call around and try to negotiate? What's the best play? If you can actually get to negotiate with a dental place, I'd urge you to simply not go there. Any dental place that negotiates is run by a loon.

Often in the US doctors and dentists will negotiate with people who do not have insurance such as the Amish, but others also because the prices that are sent to the insurance company are extremely overinflated. This is because the Insurance company gives a limit for each procedure so that doctors max the spending on each procedure in order to get the most money. They claim it doesn't affect the user since they are paying for insurance although it does raise the overall costs for everyone especially over time.

if youre that desperate, go to mexico for a couple days n get dental work done there, its like 80% off and the quality is the same as america, but the english speaking dentist will be slightly more expensive
Joshua Cook
>If they're overpriced then you are making a smart financial decision by not paying for them. I don't understand your outrage. Yeah I usually don't, so I'm unfamiliar with the process
>Wait a week or two. Doesn't that make everything worse if the tooth is actually infected?
>4 figures as in $1k? It's not too bad. Guess it could be worse.
>If you can actually get to negotiate with a dental place, I'd urge you to simply not go there. Don't they negotiate with insurance companies?
Joshua Lee
n id suggest going to cancun for it
Jonathan Nguyen
Also, depending where you live, go to a mom and pop dentist, not a corporate location. Tell them your story and they will most likely work with you on the $ part.
Blake Cox
Tempting. If I needed some serious work done I probably would, but this is just one tooth.
Joseph Sanders
Don't know where in Burgerland you're located, but it's cheaper to just fly/bus it to Mexico and have work done there. Go to either Nogales or Tijuana. All Mexican dental offices list their prices online. Most will even pick you up after crossing the border. Just do your research. I recommend Google Map reviews since they're not paid off to hide bad reviews like Yelp are.
Red flags to look for: They don't put a lead apron on you when they take your x-ray Green flags to look for: The clinic make crowns same day

well then stop bitching n get it done already padre, dont tell me youre too poor to get one tooth fixed even in overpriced america
Joshua Howard
forget all the replies in here and listen to me since i've had a lot of dental work done in the past couple years i'm in the US as well and i was spending a ton until i was told to go to a university dental office to get everything done the dentists working on you are residents, basically students yes, but they are really just assisting and learning as a very experienced dentist who is teaching them is actually doing the tough work for your situation, this would without a doubt be the best bet to put it into perspective, i got a root canal done for $310 and it went smoother than the one i paid over $1.5k for years back
Landon Cook
i like my idea better, get cheap dental, go to the beach n have a few drinks after in cancun
Dylan Hernandez
> Yeah I usually don't, so I'm unfamiliar with the process You completely misunderstood what I said. No surprise, you sounded like a moron with OP. > Doesn't that make everything worse if the tooth is actually infected? ... explain. > Don't they negotiate with insurance companies? That's unrelated.
Carter Martin
>I don't have insurance You made a very bad business decision there. Now you pay for your mistake.
Jaxon Sanchez
Second this, university dentists are great. I go to paul mitchell for haircuts too and theyre done by students for $5 and they take an insane amount of care per haircut because theyre watched by their teacher.
Joseph Brown
Based. This is the solution OP. Don’t fuck with your teeth bc one thing leads to another and next thing you know they gotta stick a fake tooth up there for 5k. Just Bite the bullet and go to the university dentist
Gavin Rogers
>You completely misunderstood what I said. No surprise, you sounded like a moron with OP. If I was smart I wouldn't be here. Sounds like you're under the impression burger medicine is an actual free market. If true that makes you the biggest moron in this thread.
>... explain The longer an infection goes untreated the more likely it is to spread and become a serious problem.
Austin Hall
I'm currently trying to use my dental insurance at work before I quit and move to a lower cost of living area. Dental insurance turns out to be pretty worthless. I have some old fillings that need to be pulled out and rebuilt, and that's gonna cost about $5k. Insurance just about covers the sales tax on it, nothing more.
Aaron Evans
Just get a passport and get your dental work done in Columbia. Better quality and decent prices
Anthony Powell
Rinse mouth with colloidal silver Add grinded eggshells powder to broth For at least 2 weeks
Real talk: ANONS, do not neglect oral hygiene. There are some things you can ignore for twenty years that will come back around and bite you in the ass. If you don't take care of your teeth, someday a little twenty year-old girl will be cleaning your choppers and say >wow, you've got a lot of mobility in these back teeth and the next thing you know, you're having teeth pulled and stumps drilled in with fake teeth screwed on to them. It is not fun. I am an oldfag. I spent several years in-country and didn't take good care of my fucking retarded teeth. Take care of your teeth. Or you'll have to be knocked out and have some replaced, and then you have to have viagra to fuck the dental hygienist. Always fuck the dental hygienist. AFTER.
Michael Perry
>If they're overpriced then you are making a smart financial decision by not paying for them. I don't understand your outrage. This is such a retarded comment. Dental work isn't like buying the latest iPhone or something, it's not a 100% optional expense. If you require dental work then you need it, therefore being outraged by the cost is justified.
Brayden Adams
dont listen to this moron lead aprons are only needed for the super old school D speed radiographs (xrays). pretty much all in the last 15+ years use F speed meaning the exposure and the dosage is so slow, multiple studies show no difference in bodily radiation exposure
same day crowns are ridiculously finicky and are weaker than traditional materials and you need to cut more tooth structure to all the clearance for them to fit.
t. cemented a few dental crowns today & made some kids cry
Jordan Jones
JFC, I believe this fucker.
Nicholas Morris
1k USD+, for a possible root canal? That's the price of completely replacing a tooth in EU. You Americans really are jewed beyond measure.
Brody Evans
>therefore someone else should pay for my shit Just take out insurance faggot. And if you think its overpriced, dont buy it. If you're willing to buy it, then it is not overpriced.
Owen Nelson
Ive got family in the us and they come back here to fix everything doctor related and vacation and its still ends up cheaper than one bill from mr Teethbergstein
