Posting this because surprisingly few know about it, and it's well worth a read. Thiel quietly published this 25 page essay in 2007 outlining his political thought much more explicitly and fully than he has anywhere else. Schmitt, Girard, Spengler, and especially Strauss seem to be his main inspirations. IMHO it's a much better dark enlightenment essay than anything Land or Yarvin ever wrote.

Tl;DR: Thiel sees modernity as having gained the world and lost it's soul, and as having abandoned the central questions of human nature. The pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness have replaced the pursuit of virtue and the good. He sees the west as now facing a perilous choice: The modern tradition carrying too great a spiritual cost and being to fragile to attack from the outside (think 9/11), or the ancient tradition, which carries far too hefty a physical cost in the age of nuclear weapons and globalization. Thiel sees Fukuyama's end of history as quite possible, but sees it as both a tragedy and a prelude to the apocalypse, a world where we amuse ourselves to death. He says: “By making people forget they have souls, the Antichrist will succeed in swindling people out of them.” The whole essay is full of similar biblical language, and best as I can tell, it is meant to be taken quite literally. He sees Straussian esotericism as a potential way forward, where the philosopher kings hold and preserve the secret knowledge protected from the masses, but is pessimistic even about that, ending that section by quoting Spengler's fiery ending to Decline of the West. He then discusses Girard's similar view, that when the scapegoat myth is fully unveiled the apocalypse will be upon us. He claims the key issue in either view is one of time, how long until the secret knowledge is revealed and destroys us? Modernity will face a reckoning for its failures, the only question is one of time.

In the meantime, individuals will still have to make a choice between Athens and Jerusalem. He clearly implies it is preferable to go with Christ. It is here that Thiel offers his only real ray of optimism, which is theological not political: "Unlike Strauss, the Christian statesman knows that the modern age will not be permanent, and will one day give way to something very different. One must never forget that one day all will be revealed, all injustices will be exposed, and that those who perpetrated them will be held to account." He concludes by advising the Christian statesman in every close call to side with peace over violence, and that may be the clearest path out of this treacherous impasse.
