Can they be the next superpower? Yes.
They've got a resource rich continent, a defacto lingua franca in spanish and a good intellectual basis.
What has stopped them is their historic jungle economies, a jungle economy pretty much means that all infrastructure is built to the nearest port to be shipped away. Back in the colonial days the portugese and spanish build roads and bridges going from towns to to the port and not to each other so that the resources could be send to the motherland for processing.
Strong investments need to be made infrastructure on a national level and continental level to facilate national commerce and cross continetal commerce.
Its easier to ship from brasil to china than it is to go from brasil to colombia.
Corruption is also a big issue and some countries got pretty bad race relations but nowwhere as bad as in africa, the middle east and asia.
