Essentially, if you want to influence an election, you can change the odds on bookmakers by placing large bets on your candidate.
The idea is that people are more likely to support the favorit, go with the crowd, than taking the contrarian route.
In terms of the money spend versus the potential impact it can have, it is perhaps the most cost efficient way to influence an election.
