I'm trying out quantitative trading. There has to be something here right? Usually there is correlation between the companies in the S&P 500 so if AAPL falls this hard relative to the others, its a buy signal for sure...

(((Quantitative trading))) is mostly trend following and the occasional contrarian. There are different assets classes and time periods that people tend to favour one over the other, but you should just backtest shit and do it out-of-sample. Btw, trend following, usually also called momentum, tends to converge to the same results given enough time, regardless of the algorithm used.

Most traders do "quant" trading it's literally as simple as buying with upward momentum. Most Quant firms are still manually managed because algo bots are horrible at making decisions in a constantly changing environment.
You might have to hold for a long time, probably months, before it starts to get worthwhile. I wouldn't like my money held up for this long just to hope it eventually rises.

That's wrong. They have well defined rules and also jumo into the downwards momenta trends. The rules are basically reading expected value inferred from a certain delay in the time series and buying it's above or selling if it's below. They do this on multiple delay intervals and then just sum the total position at any given moment in time. Momentum returns don't really have positive expected value but thwy are all positively skewed (can be easily proved mathematically).
