It's really only viable if you don't care about your credit score (getting a mortgage in the future) and you have zero assets that can be collected (including things like car, computer, tv etc.) and no (publicly known) income/ social benefits. Remember, you will have to pay for court expenses if (when) you lose.
At least that's how it is in my country. MAYBE you'd be able to get away with doing it for like $4k but if we're talking tens of thousands then they won't just forget about and let you pay $3/ month. And from what I've heard, it's harder to get away with shit like this in America because of all the poor/ desperate people you guys have.
