Why not just load arch linux on one of those instead of a ledger?

Yeah that’s what I do. Super paranoid about a backdoor in a ledger. MEW is pretty good if you want to create offline wallets. Cold storage is not for brainlets though

those can be melted or emp'd or damaged by water and/or time

Just stamp your seed phrase in to a plate of stainless steel.

that and why have a stick saying "ROB ME" with big letters on it

so can a ledger

this wasn't my question

Listen, the only way you could store your wallet in a pendrive is if that pen drive was a micro computer with wifi.
That whole ledger nano whatever is silly.

does this work if the crypto changes its wallet programming or whatever over 100s of years?

You retards really don't understand how ledger works, do you?
Even when using your "solution" you still fully expose your private keys on a device connected to the internet

yeah, and add more possibilities of making mistakes to the equation

people buy ledgers because they aren't as tech-savvy as some of you schizos

if your idea is as good as you claim, then you should consider creating your line of products

seems like YOU don't know how it works if you think it cant be emulated with a computer

>if your idea is as good as you claim, then you should consider creating your line of products

this my literal fucking point, i don't need "products" for something that exists

lmao everything can be "emulated" but just using a portable arch installation has basically no similarity to the functionality of ledgers devices you retard
tell me how you plan to not directly expose your private keys with your ebin /g/ hackerman approach

that requires you to expose your private key to an internet connection if you want to create transactions or sign messages

this.
if a virus gets onto your usb you are fucked.

Because the ledger, you can show it to your friends, so that they gap their mouths in astonishment of how edgy and updated you are with the most cutting-edge blockchain technologies and governance solutions.

If you really wanna be a tech-savvy schizo get one of these, set up your shit with LUKS. Then proceed to waste a couple of weeks programming a client/server thing such that your keys don't ever see the internet directly, but rather need to go through your layers of custom autism. Good luck!

security through obscurity is not security

If you use something like this THEN you can say you have a hardware wallet.

Flash memory is a horrible medium for long term cold storage

imagine acidently buying something with this coin

Just using a usb drive instead of a hdd/ssd doesn't make it a cold storage.

kind of a non-argument as whether you're using a flash drive with gnu/linux installed or a proper hardware wallet, you should have your key or recovery phrase written down somewhere

>you make it
>your gf needs to go out for "essentials"
>she spends your 8 digit crypto stack on a bottle of bubbly

yes. your keys will still be your keys

Well someone would have to get a random private key then do a dictionary attack to get the nmenomic phrases +bruteforce the password at the same time. So if youre really paranoid make sure your password is strong.

You can't emulate a ledger with a computer without literally altering its hardware to recreate a ledger. Brainlets think an airgapped computer is the same as a ledger which is not true.

if the ledger coins are not stored on the ledger servers how come their price can be locked?

thanks, i know it might be a dumb question

Raspberry Pi 0 says "feed me electrons".

pitrezor.com shows how to build one out.

BTW, the Pi 0 can be set up to act as a USB gadget, just like Trezor/Ledger, so you don't have to use wifi. You can if you want, though.

While that's technically correct, you can easily use airgapped bridges and encryption software to make it truly secure.

air gap + faraday cage + paper wallet + metal priv key

> he doesn't use 1000 year dvd+r mdisc
> he doesn't use 100 year dvd+r

virus can't write if the medium is read only

what's the point of these autistic hardware wallets? why not do a paper wallet or also why would ANYONE trust a hardware wallet on a fucking usb flash drive when usb flash drives regularly corrupt themselves?

install gentoo

fucking this
and this. There is some data hoarder autist on youtube that explains how flash media sucks donkey nuts and you will neck yourself in a few years when you load up the usb and it doesn't work. You need to burn your shit on archival dvd+r plus write that shit down on fucking paper or go full retard and stamp your priv keys on metal.

DO NOT RELY ON FLASH MEDIA ONLY TO STORE YOUR PRIVATE KEYS IT WILL FUCK YOU OVER IN THE LONG RUN.
