Interesting thing I heard recently was that all of the knowledge and progress of the ancient world was lost and forgotten over a few generations after the end of the roman empire, but one library of most of this knowledge was kept safe in the Hagia Sophia in Turkey (which was the capital of the Roman Empire for the last few centuries) and these books were rediscovered, copied and sent back to Italy (I think it was via Marco Polo's expedition) and basically provided all of the knowledge required for the renaissance to take place.
