Monero is an overpriced fork of Bytecoin that can be tracked, use PRV or 0.x.M.R.
Since Monero has the highest marketcap of cryptonote coins, it is the one being tracked most aggressively. If you insist on using a cryptonote coin, use something unpopular but with enough liquidity to trade.

I don't see why it would usurp bitcoin. Insitutions will put bitcoin on their balance sheets and governments want something trackable. Even if Monero wins the privacy sector, it won't eclipse Bitcoin's marketcap

Institutions, governments, and businesses are building and utilizing financial infrastructure on Ethereum, not Bitcoin. These groups are legally obligated to protect their customer's financial transactions private and will utilize zk-SNARKs and other techniques to do so. Privacy on Ethereum is the next big wave after DeFi.
