My contract says 4-8 weeks of notice period depending on agreement
I gave 4 weeks and said then I will leave

First mistake.
I had a job interview, the manager/owner that interviewed me was a marrocan. The secretaress called me back for a trial period, told her I wasn't interested for a position. She asked why, I said :"I don't work for arabs and neither should you."

Legally, you work it, he has to pay you. The problem is your contract might stipulate about leaving during specific times or dependent on how long you have worked at the business.

UK here - if 3 months notice is not in the contract, he has no legal basis to keep you there for 3 months after first notice given, and is breach of contract
If you can't agree on notice period, 8 weeks is the maximum he can keep you working there for
If you don't work, you will be in breach of contract, and you won't be liable for pay
He is right - he doesn't have to pay you after 4 weeks if the contract is what you say it is
