Based off of Census reports, about 52-59% of the population outside of the Bantustans around 1960 was white. The Bantustans, being fertile lands, had been settled by nogs long before hwites came to the continent. The western cape, which is dry semi-desert, was inhabited by the Khoikhoi "click" language people while the northern cape is the karoo and is only good for grazing due to desertification there. The Vaal, as in Transvaal, was a chilly upland region that most nogs only wandered through on their way to either northern or southern grazing areas as their pastoral lifestyle meant they had no desire to stay in an area which has temperatures similar to northern italy during wintertime (it snows).
