Objectively, it is true that the more urbanized Middle Eastern and North African realms were generally more advanced than most of European ones, during a broad range of time of the Middle Ages, with the exceptions of the Roman Empire, which still existed in the eastern Mediterranean, Italian city-states, and Iberia. France also had a good level of development, relative to the rest of the world, during the Carolingian Renaissance years of the 8th-9th centuries AD. Late Medieval Germany and England were also decent, technologically. I fear that this British program will overstate how technologically backwards Europe actually was, in comparison to the Middle East and North Africa.
