The 'war on drugs' didn't pop out of nowhere. It was a specific response to extraordinary crime rates in certain areas, many of them black. We can go back prior to the drug war, in the 60's and 70's, and things were no better for blacks. This is a basic cause/effect thing that a lot of people seem to miss. Black neighborhoods started to decline by the late-1950's, when factories started to become more efficient and more automated.

This meant that fewer young black men were working 12 hours per day doing menial tasks, and were free to do whatever they wanted with their time. They used that freedom to commit crime and form gangs. This was all prior to 'the welfare state' or 'the war on drugs' or 'mass-incarceration.' That's the great untold story of modern America.

You guys love to rip on modern blacks but consistently ignore black families of the early 20th century who had strong family units dressed appropriately and only spoke improper due to a lack of means of education (Jim Crowe) and not intentionally. We tried being "nice" and it didn't work. They had fire hoses turned on us and K9 siccd on us and we were tied up and dragged from the back of moving cars for being in the wrong towns. So we said "fuck it" and the civil rights movement and the Black Panthers happened....and it seemed to work.
