How did Canada pass the assault ban?

I can’t seem to find a single source noting what process Canada used to ban assault weapons. I’m not familiar with their government but was it some sort of executive order? Did representatives vote on it at all? Speaking of things that have no source, what mode of firearm was used in the latest mass shooting?

I always find it astonishing when people define "freedom" by their access to gun. I'm among the 80% of Canadians who fully support the government's ban on assault weapons. I believe in the freedom not to be shot.
